WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?

As its name indicates, Hypnotherapy uses “hypnosis” as a method of providing “therapy” to for  different problems such as anxiety, stress, unwanted habits or phobias, etc.. Hypnosis is an altered state of mind in which the person is said to be in a trance.

This trance state used in hypnotherapy, is in fact a very normal phenomenon. It occurs  naturally to most people during their normal, everyday life. It is very likely that you have been in a naturally occurring trance:

  • When you are daydreaming, you are in a trance.
  • When you are immersed in a book and you can see clearly in your imagination the characters in the story and the place where the action is happening, you are in a trance.
  • If you have ever been driving and thinking about something else at the same time, to the point that you do not remember the last few miles you drove, you were in a trance.

The origins of hypnotherapy go back to ancient tribal rites, but its scientific study started in the 18th century with Doctor Mesmer (hence the word mesmerising).

HOW DOES HYPNOTHERAPY HELP?

In hypnotherapy, the state of trance is used to access the subconscious part of the mind, because our automatic actions and our fears are under the control of our subconscious mind. This is why it is very hard for some people to stop smoking or to change any other habits. They may know logically what they have to do, but if their subconscious mind is having none of it, change cannot happen.

To change a habit, or to get rid of an irrational fear, the conscious and the subconscious minds have to be in agreement. That is what hypnotherapy does; it gets both parts of the mind to agree.

Hypnotherapy, through the trance state, accesses the subconscious mind and it updates the information it holds so that it can work according to the wishes of the person. Hypnotherapy is completely different from stage hypnosis.

During hypnotherapy sessions the clients are always conscious and in control, able to come out of the trance at any time if they choose to do so.
