What is counselling and how does it work?

Talking with someone you trust about a problem or a concern is always helpful, hence the well-known saying: “a problem shared is a problem halved”. It helps to reduce stress, to reflect, and often to get a new perspective on the problem, reducing its impact. Some people are lucky to have a partner, family member or a friend with whom they can discuss their concerns. Others do not. However, there are some issues which you might not want to talk about with people close to you. This could be because of embarrassment or because you do not want to worry them.

Counselling offers the opportunity to talk to someone completely independent from family or social ties, in total confidentiality and without fear of being judged. This allows complete openness and promotes the reflection and exploration needed to find a personal solution. The most important elements of successful counselling are trust and confidentiality. The role of the counsellor is to help you to explore and to understand your own mind, it is not to tell you what to do. Because you are a unique person and your problem is unique to you, what works for others might not work for you. In short, the role of counselling is to guide you on your journey towards finding the resolution that is right for you.
